How To Make Red Sangria

Transport yourself to the south of Spain with this refreshing red sangria. In my opinion, sangria should always be red and shared with friends. It begs to be served at a patio party on a summer’s day.

Sangria is the original batched cocktail because it’s always made in a pitcher. All you need to do is pour in wine, liquor, citrus, and voila — you have a refreshing pitcher of sangria with about six servings.

This recipe is boozier than most with rum and triple sec. While the triple sec doesn’t add much more alcohol, it does add citrus notes that make this cocktail so refreshing. Even more citrus flavor is added through orange juice and lemon-lime soda.

In Spain, it’s traditional to use a lemon soda but because lemon soda isn’t as accessible in the United States, a lemon-lime Sprite does the trick.

Wine for sangria

You don’t need to spend a lot of money to make a delicious red wine sangria. In fact, I prefer cheap wine in my sangria. All the extra things like rum and orange juice that go into the sangria dress up the wine, so the quality matters less.

When choosing a wine, you want to find an affordable dry red. You want a dry wine as opposed to a sweet one because if not, the addition of rum, soda, and orange juice will make the drink too sweet.

The perfect dry red wine to use is Tempranillo, a Spanish red, but you can also use Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. South American red varieties are another great option. Trader Joe’s is a great place to find cheap dry red wines.

Adding fruit

This recipe calls for frozen grapes and orange slices, but you can add any fruit you want to your sangria. The trick is to always keep frozen grapes and orange slices in your freezer to add to your pitcher. The frozen fruit will chill the drink without watering it down.
