You can spend a lifetime exploring every corner of Mexico City and you still wouldn\u2019t have seen it all. If you\u2019re planning your first trip to Mexico City, a week is a good amount of time to get acquainted with this massive city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this itinerary, you\u2019ll find how to explore Mexico City to the fullest in 7 days.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Day 1: Roma norte + La Condesa<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Walking around neighborhoods is the best way to get to know a city. As you walk around Roma Norte and La Condesa, you\u2019ll notice romantic villas amongst lush greenery, plazas with dancing fountains, and cute coffee shops on every corner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Breakfast at Plaza R\u00edo de Janeiro<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Start your morning at the famous and delicious Panader\u00eda Rosetta. Order a guava roll and coffee to go and walk over to the nearby Plaza R\u00edo de Janeiro. At the plaza, there\u2019s a fountain with a replica of Michelangelo\u2019s David in the middle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the weekend, you\u2019ll find vintage popups in the plaza. These popups are typically more affordable than the secondhand shops in the neighborhood. The resellers won’t arrive until the afternoon, so come back later for some shopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avenida \u00c1msterdam<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

After you devour your pastries, walk along the treelined Avenida \u00c1msterdam with your coffee in hand. The avenue is a loop that surrounds Parque M\u00e9xico. You can walk through the median under the shade of trees but don\u2019t forget to stop at cafes and shops on either side of the street. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parque M\u00e9xico and Parque Espa\u00f1a<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

These two parks are a great place to kick your feet up and relax after exploring the neighborhood. Parque M\u00e9xico is the larger of the two and attracts dog walkers, skate enthusiasts, and salsa dancers. At both parks, you\u2019ll see a lot of locals enjoying the green space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secondhand Shopping<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

From vinyl records to secondhand clothes, Mexico City loves vintage. If you wander the streets of Roma Norte, you\u2019ll bump into vintage stores like Erre Vintage, Goodbye Folk Vintage, and Roma Vintage. Fair warning that these stores are well-curated; therefore, they aren\u2019t cheap. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mercado Medell\u00edn<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

If you want a taste of a traditional Mexican market, go to Mercado Medell\u00edn. You can pick up Mexican candies, ingredients, and goodies to take home with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dinner and Drinks in Roma<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

To celebrate your first day in Mexico City, get drinks at Licorer\u00eda Limantour, the #4 bar in the world, before heading to Rosetta (the restaurant) for dinner. You\u2019ll need reservations at both places, so make sure to book them in advance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 2: <\/strong>THE CITY CENTER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mexico City\u2019s city center doubles as its historic center, making it a bit hectic. Roam around its streets to hit these must-see spots in the bustling downtown area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Z\u00f3calo<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Every city in Mexico has a Z\u00f3calo, or public square, at its center. Mexico City\u2019s Plaza de la Constituci\u00f3n is the largest public square in Latin America. At the Z\u00f3calo, you can see the palace, city hall, and stunning architecture. Take a photo with the giant Mexican flag that flies above the Centro Hist\u00f3rico. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Palacio de Bellas Artes<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a nice walk through the city center to the Palacio de Bellas Artes in the neighboring area of Alameda. With a colorful art nouveau dome, it\u2019s hard to miss the Palacio de Bellas Artes. It’s home to a museum with rotating modern art exhibits and a permanent collection of murals that were painted by famous Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera. Tickets to visit the museum are 75 MXN and it’s free on Sundays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to get a good view of the Palacio de Bellas Artes from above, go across the street to Sears and look out the window. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Alameda Central<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Next to Palacio de Bellas Artes is Alameda Central, a lively park with a market on the weekends. At the little market, you\u2019ll find street food, agua frescas, and souvenirs. Through the trees, there\u2019s a good view of the Torre Latinoamericana.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Torre Latinoamerica<\/strong>na<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

At 44 stories tall, Torre Latinoamericana towers over Centro Hist\u00f3rico. That may not sound very tall but it used to be the tallest building in Latin America. Today, it is a fixture in Mexico City\u2019s skyline and acts as an iconic photo op. You can go up to the observation deck for 170 MXN or go for a drink on the 41st floor for the price of a cocktail. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Ciudadela and Mercado San Juan<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

For the ultimate artisanal market experience, head to La Ciudadela. It has rows and rows of vendors selling everything from ceramics from Puebla to textiles from Oaxaca. Many vendors accept credit cards but make sure to bring cash just in case. For a more chill vibe, go to Mercado San Juan. Here, there are fewer vendors and people so you can shop on your own time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Ninos<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Day 3: Chapultepec<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You can spend a whole day exploring the Bosque de Chapultepec, Mexico City\u2019s largest park. It has museums, lakes, castles, history, and so much more. The main entrance is at the end of the Paseo de la Reforma at the Puerta de los Leones, an archway with two lions guarding the entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Museum of Modern Art<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Start your day at the Museum of Modern Art. It\u2019s a three-story museum that showcases Mexican modern art, including the famous The Two Fridas. On Sundays, the museum is free to enter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Bike<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Bike Chapultepec<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

To make the most out of your day in the park, rent a bike. Across the street from the museum, you can rent bikes from Ecobici by downloading their app. It was 7 USD to rent bikes for about 2 hours. Chapultepec is divided into three sections, with section one being the closest to the city center. The park can be hilly at times so be prepared for some uphill stretches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ni\u00f1os H\u00e9roes Monument<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

If you walk directly through the main entrance at Puerta de los Leones, you\u2019ll bump into the Ni\u00f1os H\u00e9roes Monument, which commemorates six cadets who lost their lives at one of the last battles of the Mexican-American war. From this monument, the park splits up into different pathways that you can take.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chapultepec Castle<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

On top of Chapultepec Hill sits a castle that used to house the Mexican president. Today, it\u2019s home to the National History Museum, manicured gardens, and beautiful architecture (inside and out). To enter the castle, it costs 85 MXN. Even if you don\u2019t care to explore the castle\u2019s grounds, you can climb up the hill for great views of Mexico City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

National Museum of Anthropology<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Even if you aren’t an anthropology buff, the National Museum of Anthropology is worth the visit for the museum\u2019s architecture. The exhibit halls wrap around a courtyard with a giant fountain. The must-see artifacts are the Aztec Sun Stone, Montezuma’s Headdress, the Olmec Colossal Head, and the recreation of Palak\u2019s tomb. Tickets to the museum are 90 MXN for foreigners and free on Sundays for locals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Pyramid<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Day 4: Day Trip to Teotihuac\u00e1n <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The ancient city of Teotihuac\u00e1n is only an hour outside of Mexico City. The best and easiest way to get there is via Uber. Tickets to enter are 80 MXN and you can go in and out all day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ancient City of Teotihuac\u00e1n<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

At Teotihuac\u00e1n, you\u2019ll walk along the 1.5-mile-long Avenue of the Dead to see the Temple of Feathered Serpent, The Citadel, and the stars of the show: The Pyramid of the Sun and the Moon. Along the way, there will be plaques to teach you about what you’re looking at (in both English and Spanish!) and plenty of vendors trying to sell you souvenirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Museum del Sitio <\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Tucked behind the Pyramid of the Sun is a small free museum that further explains the history of the ancient city. It\u2019s a good place to escape from the heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Drinks<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Drinks at La Gruta<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

After exploring all of Teotihuac\u00e1n in the hot sun, it\u2019ll be time for some well-deserved drinks. Outside of Gate 5 is La Gruta, a restaurant inside a cavern. The food honestly isn\u2019t that great here, so you\u2019ll want to save your appetite for went you\u2019re back in Mexico City. But, you\u2019re here for the ambiance and the fact that you can enjoy a margarita in a cave, so order drinks and guacamole to enjoy your final hours in Teotihuac\u00e1n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 5: Xochimilco<\/strong> + Coyoac\u00e1n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Xochimilco and Coyoac\u00e1n are both in the southern part of Mexico City, so it\u2019s easy to knock out both neighborhoods in one day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xochimilco Canals Tour<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

People flock to Xochimilco\u2019s canals for bachelorette parties, romantic cruises, and Instagram-able photos at this UNESCO heritage site. You\u2019ll want to book a tour to explore the network of ancient tours on a trajinera<\/em>, which is a traditional gondola-like boat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I recommend this half-day tour <\/a>that takes on a mini walking tour through the neighborhood with a guide before hopping on a 2-hour boat ride. It includes breakfast and lunch in the market, plus a mezcal tasting and bottomless micheladas on the canal cruise. Make sure to hire a floating band of mariachis to perform a song or two for your crew. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Casa Azul: Frida Kahlo Museum<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

After your canal cruise, head to the Frida Kahlo Museum in Coyoac\u00e1n. The museum is at Casa Azul, the small blue house that Frida Kahlo grew up in. The museum focuses more on Frida Kahlo\u2019s life than her art.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll need to buy tickets to the museum well in advance and choose an arrival time. If you arrive late, you risk not being granted entrance, so give yourself at least 30 minutes to get to Coyoac\u00e1n from Xochimilco. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explore Coyoac\u00e1n <\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Before heading back to the city center, make sure to walk the streets of Coyoac\u00e1n and pop into Mercado Coyoac\u00e1n, which is steps away from the Frida Kahlo Museum<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Pujol,<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Day 6: Polanco<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Polanco is the Beverly Hills of Mexico City. It\u2019s a district of luxury shops surrounded by luxury homes. Stroll the streets of this ritzy neighborhood to get a taste of the good life and make reservations at top restaurants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Window Shopping<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Polanco is known for its shopping malls and luxury stores. If you walk down Presidente Masaryk Avenue, you\u2019ll be able to do some window shopping at boutiques from top designers and more approachable chain stores like Zara. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dine at Pujol or Quintonil<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The top two restaurants in Mexico City are in Polanco. In 2023, Pujol and Quintonil were named in the top 15 of the World\u2019s Best 50 Restaurants list. Both restaurants focus on elevating Mexican cuisine and offer tasting menus. Although both tasting menus come at Polanco price tags, it\u2019s much more affordable than going to a similar dining experience in Europe or the United States. Make sure to book your table far in advance.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 7: Ju\u00e1rez + Paseo de la Reforma<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The neighborhood of Ju\u00e1rez has a real city feel. It\u2019s not as hectic as Centro Hist\u00f3rico but it\u2019s not as laid back as Roma Norte. Walk along the streets to get a taste of life in Mexico City. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paseo de la Reforma<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

By this point, you\u2019ve seen most of Mexico City, all that\u2019s left is to walk down the iconic Paseo de la Reforma. The Paseo de la Reforma is the main artery that runs through the city. Walking the street west through Ju\u00e1rez will lead you down to Chapultepec.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Angel of Independence <\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

If you walk down the Paseo de la Reforma, you\u2019ll run into The Angel of Independence or El \u00c1ngel<\/em>. It\u2019s a golden angel that commemorates the centennial of the start of the Mexican War of Independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Pride<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
La Zona Rosa<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Within the larger neighborhood of Ju\u00e1rez is La Zona Rosa, a historically LGBTQ+ district with a growing Korean immigrant population. It\u2019s known for its fun nightlife and great restaurants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
