Turkey Burger Sliders for the Game

Sliders are meant for snacking, especially during football season. These Turkey Burger Sliders are a simple crowd-pleaser that comes together in no time. They’re a great addition to a summer BBQ or Super Bowl spread.

Compared to regular hamburgers, turkey burgers need some love. This Turkey Burger Sliders recipe focuses on the turkey burger patties themselves to make sure they turn out juicy and delicious. Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard to keep the meat moist and avocado oil and egg hold the patties together. There’s also half a red onion in it (you can use any kind) and garlic powder. You can easily substitute the onion for ½ a teaspoon of onion powder to appease any picky eaters. In a pinch, you can use frozen patties from Trader Joe’s. You can also make this vegetarian by using a vegetable patty.

The trick to making the perfect-sized sliders with ease is to use premade dinner rolls from the grocery store. You can reach for brands like Nature’s Own Brioche-Style Butter Rolls or King’s Hawaiian Original Rolls for a sweeter taste. Most grocery stores will have a house or private-label brand version as well.

Making The Sliders

To make the sliders, you’ll cook four large turkey burger patties on a grill, griddle, or pan. After the turkey patties are ready, you’ll place them onto a dinner roll pack of 12 that has been cut horizontally into a top and bottom part and slathered with mayo, mustard, and any other condiment you like. Stack your toppings on the patties, place the halved dinner rolls on top, and cut along the dinner rolls until you have 12 sliders.

Speaking of toppings here are some ideas beyond the simple lettuce and tomato:

  • Jalapenos
  • Banana peppers
  • Fried onions
  • Chips
  • Cabbage slaw
  • Caramelized onions
  • Avocado
  • Grilled pineapple

These Turkey Burger Sliders are surprisingly filling. If you’re making the sliders as a part of a larger snacking or appetizer spread, plan for about two turkey burgers per person. If the sliders are the star of the meal, plan for three to four per person.

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1/2 medium red onion red or white
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp avocado oil (additional for griddle or pan)
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 10 cranks of black pepper

For Serving Sliders

  • 12 pack dinner rolls
  • mustard
  • mayo
  • cheddar cheese
  • tomato
  • lettuce

Instructions

Make the Turkey Burger Patties

  • Dice 1/2 medium red onion or white onion.
  • Add 1 lb ground turkey, 1/2 medium red onion (or white), 1 egg, 1 tbsp Dijon mustard, 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce, 1 tbsp avocado oil (or another neutral oil), 1 tsp kosher salt, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, and 10 cranks of black pepper to a bowl and combine.
  • Form seasoned ground turkey mixture into four large patties. You want them to be thin to cover more surface area.
  • Heat a griddle or pan over medium-high heat. You'll know it's the right temperature when you hover your hand over it and it's warm.
  • Add a teaspoon of avocado oil or another neutral oil to the griddle or pan so your turkey burgers don't stick.
  • Add the turkey patties to the hot griddle or pan. Let cook undisturbed for five minutes on each side.
  • After 5 minutes, flip over the turkey patty and add cheddar cheese. For more ooey-gooey melted cheese, cover the patties.

Build the Sliders

  • Cut a 12 pack dinner rolls in half horizontally so you're left with a big top and bottom bun. Add mustard, mayo, or any other condiment to the top and bottom of the buns.
  • Transfer cooked turkey patties onto the bottom part of the halved dinner roll bun. Arrange the patties so they're centrally placed between dinner roll buns in quadrants.
  • Add toppings like lettuce and tomato.
  • Add the top half of the dinner roll bun on top.
  • Cut into 12 along the dinner roll creases to create mini sliders and serve.
