A hot day calls for a margarita. And when the summer cranks up the heat to 90 degrees, a slice of watermelon will cure you. So, why not combine the two for a spicy summer drink pitcher? Quench your thirst for summer with a spicy watermelon margarita.

A pitcher of spicy watermelon margarita with two glasses

This spicy watermelon margarita pitcher uses fresh watermelon and jalapeño for a twist on a classic marg. The watermelon adds sweetness without having to use simple syrup, while the jalapeño ensures your drink isn’t overly sweet.

A margarita pitcher, especially this one, is a summer staple to beat the heat at pool parties, outdoor gatherings, and even taco night.

The non-negotiable ingredient: fresh lime juice

Fresh limes are a must in any margarita recipe. Lime concentrate or a Jose Cuervo margarita mix won’t do the trick. This recipe calls for 1 cup of lime juice. Each lime yields about 1 oz of juice, so you’ll need to juice at least 8 limes, but we’ll say 10 to be safe.

If you’re making this pitcher for an event, save yourself the stress by squeezing your limes ahead of time so you’re not rushing to get drinks out on the table.

How do you juice a watermelon?

This recipe features fresh watermelon juice. The easiest way to get watermelon juice is by pulsing chunks of fresh watermelon in a blender. You might need to push the fruit down a couple of times before it easily blends. Just don’t add water, or you’ll dilute your juice.

You’ll need about 1/4 of a large watermelon to yield two cups of watermelon juice. You can use the rest of the watermelon as a garnish. On a hot summer’s day, putting a slice of watermelon in your margarita is the most refreshing snack.

Cranking up the heat

In this recipe, we only use one jalapeño for a slight kick, but if you want your drink to be spicier, you can opt for 21 Seeds Cucumber Jalapeño Tequila or just add more jalapeño. When serving the margaritas, rim the glasses with Tajín so every sip has a little spice.

Single serving watermelon margarita

The above recipe is for a pitcher that serves about eight margaritas. If you don’t know if your guests will drink that much, you can always half the recipe. A pitcher is the way to go for a party, but if you wanted to just make one or two on the fly, here are the measurements:

2 oz tequila

1 oz triple sec

1 oz lime juice (about 1 lime)

2 oz watermelon juice

1.5 oz water

To make a single serving, shake the above ingredients and pour over ice in a Tajín-rimmed glass.
